Medicare and Medicaid: Do They Work Together?

Updated: May 8

This is a complicated subject. We are going to provide some basic information that may help you to understand what to expect if you may be using the services of both agencies. We have sourced our information from several places. The first place we usually look for answers to anything involving Medicare is the “Medicare & You 2021” book, published by Medicare. If you are using Medicare you may receive a copy automatically, download it from the Medicare website, or call Medicare and ask for a copy.

We also found two articles on the internet that we thought were helpful. The first article is, “Can I be enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid at the same time?” This article was written by Josh Schultz and includes common questions and the answers to them. The second article is published by United Healthcare and discusses the relationship between Medicare and Medicaid and Dual Special Needs Plans offered by many Medicare insurance carriers.

The simple answer to the question posed in the title of this article is yes, Medicare and Medicaid do work together. Medicare will be the first payer for expenses that Medicare covers. Medicaid may cover expenses beyond what is covered by Medicare. In this case, Medicare will continue to cover expenses that it typically covers.

Many Medicare insurance carriers have unique plans for those who receive Medicare and full Medicaid services. The plans are called Dual Special Needs Plans, otherwise known as DSNP. These plans may have additional benefits.

If you want to find out if you qualify for a DSNP you may call Medicare, your Medicare insurance provider or your insurance agent to determine your qualification status.

As always, we are here to help.

If you would like to read either of the articles they can be found on our websites. If you don’t already have a copy of “Medicare & You” either printed or electronic version, get one. There is lots of information that will be helpful to you!
